She was put on this case with two other Deputy Marshals...one a man from her past who she had feelings for. The witness was a local newspaper reporter and had been interviewing a well known environmentalist who had disappeared. She also had discovered a US Senator might have ties to terrorism and was involved in this environment project. The three Marshals started out with the witness in secret after the Marshall's office was bombed. They do everything possible to protect the witness and keep her alive. There are so many twists and turns in the story you will not want to put the book down until it is finished.</span>Mabel Jane'shttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00660307963831495864noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4029649218962373236.post-58351064693244661302018-04-04T09:04:00.000-07:002018-04-04T09:05:42.971-07:00Books..Books and more book reviews...<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Keturah by Lisa T. Bergren</b>.....I was drawn to chose this book from the title Keturah as having a great aunt who I never met by that name. </span><br />
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;">This story takes place in 1772 in England and ends in the West Indies. Keturah and her two sisters find themselves without a mother or father in their lives. Their father owned a sugar cane plantation in the West Indies and had passed away leaving it as the girls inheritance. They decided to travel to the West Indies to save their plantation. This was never done by ladies of their importance and the other plantation owners did not accept them and treated them very badly. A childhood friend of Keturah's traveled on the same ship...much more about him to come. This is a story of their adventure and the closeness of the three sisters. Great read, Lisa! </span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;"><b>In Places Hidden by Tracie Peterson</b>...Camri Coulter boarded a train for the West Coast to find out what had happened to her brother who is a successful San Francisco attorney. She had not heard from him for three months and no one knew what had become of him. Camri's search leads her in the back streets of the city where she meets Patrick Murdock. Her brother Caleb had defended Patrick successfully from a false murder charge. He seems to know more about Caleb than anyone. Camri and Patrick join forces to look for Caleb, but can she trust him to protect her from the dangers that control the city. This is an action packed romantic adventure and a spiritual journey. Loved it!</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">Two sisters, Rebecca and Flora Hawes lived in Chicago in 1892. During that time a lot was expected of women. Rebecca and Flora were not your typical ladies of that area. They could do whatever they wanted as their father had given them free reign. They loved history and adventures, so that is the direction they went. They had learned different languages and went to many different places, ending up in a sandstorm in the Sinai Desert where the sisters had been on a quest to find an important biblical manuscript. Very entertaining!</span></div>

Being a visual person, this avenue of interest has been one that has pulled me in. Being mindful of mindlessly viewing the millions of Pinterest boards and pinning endless ways to create, decorate and reorganize ones life, I have tried to limit myself to small increments of Pinterest time.<br />
<br />
When I originally started this blog, I had and continue to have the women in my past and present life in mind. Again, as a tribute to them. My mother, who is 83, has a Pinterest account. She has committed for the last few years and the present to care for my father who has Parkinsons. Not an easy position to be in. Mom has never been known to be idle (putting it mildly). Or, to have idle hands. She amazes me with her God given talent. God says in his word that we are his "workmanship". Another word for workmanship is "Masterpiece". No matter where we are in life or what position we're in, we are His creation. Beautiful.<br />
<br />
Today, I received a package in the mail from mom for my birthday. She is one of my followers on Pinterest. I'm not much of a dreamer, but I like pinning practical ideas and things that catch my eye. One thing recently, was this beautiful shawl. Is it something I would go out and purchase? Probably not. But on Pinterest, it's my "style."<br />

My family has always given me grief over the many chairs I've collected over the years. I can't seem to pass up an old chair, even if it's in need of repair. I have upholstered, refinished and painted several over the years. No one seems to complain though when it's time to "sit for a spell". It's interesting to see who gravitates toward what chairs. </div>

Yesterday, I received a package in the mail with a sampler worked by my mother. This is a picture of the Fons and Porter sampler pattern she used. My mother does beautiful work and I will cherish the one she made for me.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

My sister mailed the package for mom and she wouldn't be my sister without including something from herself. Cindy is a "giver" and she included this beautiful book on buttons.<br />

The Spoon River Scenic Drive, which is the first two weekends in October is a highlight here in the Midwest. In past years, it was also a highlight of my parents. They relocated to Georgia a few years ago, and I know my mother misses the beautiful colors, sights and smells. This one is for you mom! <br />
<br />
This year being unseasonably cooler than most, we enjoyed our Spoon River tenderloin sitting in the vehicle. Now that's traditional...<br />

Mabel Jane's is named after my grandmother Mabel Jane, that I never knew. She passed away when I was about four years old. I don't have any personal recollections...only those that others have shared with me. I have been told that she was strong in all areas of her life. A woman with purpose and determination.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I have a love for old buttons and I think that came from Grandma Mabel Jane. Her beautiful button collection which was hand sewn on velvet covered cards was passed down to a family member and I have some that I treasure. When I started my blog in June of this year, naming my blog Mabel Jane's was my desire to pay tribute to her and the creative women in my life.</div>

Today was one of those "never too sick" to bake days. I guess that means I'll have to return to work tomorrow. <br />

We're having company Labor Day weekend, so I thought I would get ahead of things and baked a loaf of banana bread. I was looking through my books yesterday and came across this one.<br />

Some books are read and passed on and then there are those that we keep for re-reading or for something in them that has touched us.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Sixteen years ago, when I was going through a very traumatic time in my life, my parents gave me this devotional book. I will always cherish it for the inscription written by my dad. Dad has always had beautiful penmanship and when this was written, he had not had Parkinson's disease all that long. Now, at 87, he cannot talk much and writes little due to the Parkinson's.<br />
<br />
Several years ago, Dad did a little woodworking as a hobby and this pen is one of the last things he was able to make. I continue to treasure the simple reminder, but impacting statement made by dad all those years ago. <br />

I recently spotted this sweet copper plate in a local thrift store. Had there not been a notecard taped to the back, I would have never known that it is an Egyptian "tin washed" copper plate. By the looks of the note I would guess it to be vintage. <br />

Every morning around 6 a.m., I try to walk a mile outside. This morning I decided to take a bag of our garden tomatoes and cucumbers along to drop off at my daughter's house five blocks away. <br />
<br />
As I walked, I realized my little bag of produce felt very heavy. Switching from arm to arm, I couldn't wait to drop it off. Once I did, it was a reminder that the Lord desires for us to give Him even the littlest of "burdens". <br />
<br />
Cast all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you. 1 Peter 5:6-8<br />

The bunk mate said his sister back home in PA. Walt told him jokingly to "send her my love" even though he didn't know her. Two years later, that joke turned to reality. They were married in 1947. Walt asked Jean when he got out of the service where she would like to live, PA or in the "Midwest" which was his home area. Her response was the "Midwest" of course. No questions asked. Here she is city girl meets country living.<br />

One of the things we inherited from my in-laws were a set of their dishes. When it came time to divide things up no one seemed to want them. Even though they were of a rather peculiar color, I found them appealing. Especially, when I turned them over and they were "Allens of California Pottery". My in-laws last name. Certainly they needed to be rescued.</div>

We did manage though to transport some to Georgia a few weeks ago....just enough to make two pies for mom and dad. The recipe was passed down from Grandma Lewis to Aunt Martha to mom...now me.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> <u style="background-color: white;"><span style="color: #444444;">Rhubarb Pie</span></u></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">3 1/2 cps. rhubarb, fresh or frozen (1" pieces)</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">1 1/2 cps. sugar</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">2 tblsps. cornstarch</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #444444; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">1/4 cup water </span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Mix the above ingredients and pour into pie shell. Dot with 2 tbsps. butter and place top crust on, piercing with a fork. Sprinkle cinnamon and sugar on top. Bake @ 350 degrees for approximately 45 minutes. Place aluminum foil around the edge of crust to prevent the edges burning.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #444444; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">2 cps. flour</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #444444; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">1 tsp. salt</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

Grandma Lewis is the only grandma I knew growing up. She was the best! Over night stays meant sleeping in the guest bedroom with the sweetest smelling sheets and fluffiest pillows ever...We never took our own pajamas, as Grandma always supplied us with one of Grandpa's white T-shirts... which touched the floor on us. You were princess for a day! <br />

On a recent trip to Georgia, my mother gifted me with this quilted tabletopper. The pattern is called "Twisted". Mom has been sewing and quilting since she was just a little girl. Growing up, I don't remember a day that she was not sewing, quilting or shopping for fabric for such. She made everything from bathing suits for us to suit jackets for my dad. <br />
<br />
Mom has never sold her goods for profit, but has reaped lots of compliments from gifting people with her beautiful pieces. She has a God given talent and she has used it. Her work is just as beautiful on the back sides as the front. Thank you mom for being you!<br />
